The next morning, Sam checked in with Becky by phone. Things were ramping up for the final deliveries of the week.

“A lot of folks are planning to come by to pick up their cakes and pies for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals,” Becky told her. “But there’s a big multi-tray cookie order for a party tonight, a half-sheet office party cake, and there’s an afternoon wedding. I can’t even imagine getting married the same week as Christmas. The woman must be an expert planner, or she’s insane.”

Sam chuckled. “Set the delivery items aside so they don’t get mixed in with those the customers are coming in to pick up. I’ll be there in a little while, and I can get the deliveries out of the way.”

An hour later at Sweet’s Sweets, Sam surveyed the orders. “Zoë ordered cookies? She knows I always bring by a tray for her to serve to the guests.”

“Maybe she got a little panicky at how fast the holiday is sneaking up on us. Christmas Eve is only a few days away.”

“I should have stopped by the B&B before now,” Sam said. “Anyway, these are complimentary. And I’m going to box up a few of those cinnamon rolls as a personal gift for Zoë and Darryl.”

She assembled one of her purple bakery boxes and filled it with the warm rolls that had just been drizzled with her special cinnamon glaze.

“I’m sad that we haven’t had more time together this month,” Zoë said, when Sam arrived at her place thirty minutes later. “We’ve been booked solid with skiers, and it looks like a full house through New Year’s weekend.”

“I know. Same at the bakery. Is this the most popular year to get married or what? I can’t believe how many wedding cakes Becky has finished in the last two weeks alone.”

Zoë accepted the box of cinnamon rolls, mocking a swoon when she peeked inside and took a whiff. Sam set the cookie tray for the B&B guests on the kitchen counter.

“Stay for coffee?” Zoë asked.

“I wish. But I’ve got several more deliveries, and who knows how many more there will be by the time I get back to the shop. I know you’re busy Christmas Eve, but maybe we can all get together the next day when your guests are out on the slopes.”

“We would love that. Darryl was just saying it’s been ages since he’s seen you guys.”

“Deal.”

Sam went back out to her van and checked the next of her deliveries. She’d planned to basically make a loop, taking the most fragile item for the wedding reception first, then circling back toward the middle of town for the smaller cakes and the cookie trays. The last of those would bring her back to within a few blocks of the bakery, where she would check in and see where her help was needed most.

Two hours later, she was down to one—admittedly gigantic—box of assorted cookies destined for one of the sprawling adobe homes on a couple of acres in the shadow of Taos Mountain.
